UGLY LOW-QUALITY PHONE CLIP, NOT A MOVIE. Secretly recorded on a cheap old phone by someone hiding who is not supposed to be filming. We only ever see what the lens records: the phone itself and the hands, fingers and thumbs of whoever is filming never appear anywhere in frame. ONE UNBROKEN TAKE from one hiding place: no cuts, no edits, no second camera, no change of angle and no change of position at any moment. The take opens on a far-away frame that holds the whole room, then the zoom eases in a little at a time until the faces are close, and eases back out along the way; the zoom is the only thing that ever changes the framing, always the same place seen from the same side, and the whole scene stays in frame. The hand holding the phone is steady but human: the picture breathes and drifts slowly the whole time, the horizon sits a little off and is corrected late, autofocus hunts now and then, exposure pumps, and the subject often sits off-center. Nothing is composed and nothing is clean. Everything is equally soft and equally in focus: no blurred background, no bokeh, no shallow depth of field, no macro shots, no cinematic lighting, no color grading, no slow motion, never a clean or sharp frame. Low resolution, washed-out faded colors, lifted grey blacks, milky haze from a greasy lens. Silent. No text, no captions, no watermark, no phone interface, no fingers, no thumbs, no hands of the person filming. @PHARAOH: an Egyptian king in his forties, lean, sun-browned, kohl-lined eyes, a blue and gold striped nemes headdress, a broad gold collar, a white pleated linen kilt, black rectangular sunglasses flat across his eyes. He sits back on the throne with one ankle crossed over the opposite knee, busy with himself the whole time: turning the glass a quarter turn with two fingers, tapping the arm of the throne on no rhythm, pushing the sunglasses up with a knuckle, rolling a shoulder, re-crossing the other ankle over, watching the far doorway. He is interested in the matcha and his own comfort. He never looks toward the camera. Character appearance only. @MATCHA: a tall clear glass of bright green matcha on a low table at the king's elbow, pale foam on top, a steel straw in it, condensation running down the outside. The green is the brightest colour in the room. Prop only. @COUNTERS: exactly THREE modern note counting machines on the floor and no more than three, small white and chrome boxes with an open hopper and a stacking tray below, a note wheel that blurs when it runs, a cable trailing across the stone. All three run the whole take: a brick dropped in the hopper fans through with a hard flutter and lands counted, and the next goes straight in. No lettering or brand marks. Prop only. @CASH: banknotes everywhere from the first frame, flat pale green notes banded into bricks the size of a hand, in loose heaps on reed mats, knee high walls of counted bricks, and spilling from the mouths of linen sacks and reed baskets standing open on the stone. No faces, no numbers and no lettering on them. Prop only. @SCRIBES: three Egyptian treasury scribes in white linen kilts, shaved heads, sitting cross legged on reed mats in a row with one of @COUNTERS in front of each. They work continuously: feed a brick in, watch it fan, lift the counted stack out, square it with both hands, add it to the wall at the shoulder, reach for the next. Their hands move in every frame. A fourth walks in with a full linen sack over one shoulder, drops it and walks straight back out. None of them ever looks toward the camera. Character appearance only. @BACKS: a fifth scribe crouched low in the part of the hall closest to the lens with his back to the camera, bare backed in a linen kilt, tipping a reed basket of notes onto a mat and raking them flat. He is so low and so close that his bare back, shoulders and the back of his head fill the whole bottom left quarter of the picture and the bottom edge of every frame is cut off by him and the basket, not blurred, just as soft as everything else. He rakes the whole take and never turns toward the camera. Character appearance only. @HALL: a long throne room in an Egyptian palace, two rows of thick painted columns in ochre, blue and green, walls painted floor to ceiling with gods and offering scenes, a stone slab floor, and a low dais at the far end carrying a heavy gilded throne with carved lion legs. Oil lamps burn in niches and high window slots throw hard bars of daylight across the floor with dust turning in them. @COUNTERS and @CASH are the only things in the room that are not ancient. The view comes from the far end of the hall from behind a thick painted column with the crouching scribe between the lens and the room, off to one side so the dais sits over to the right and the row of seated scribes runs from the bottom left across toward it, 16 meters from the throne, at chest height. The view is NEVER from in front of the throne, never square on to it, never straight down the middle of the hall and never symmetrical. Environment only. One unbroken take of 7 seconds from one hiding place behind the column at the far end: no cuts, no second camera, no new angles; only the zoom changes, and it travels a long way, from a far frame holding the whole length of the hall to a close frame on the throne. This is ancient Egypt and everyone in it is an ancient Egyptian. @PHARAOH on the throne, the three running machines of @COUNTERS and the heaps of @CASH are in the frame together every single second. @PHARAOH is never the figure closest to the lens: the man nearest the camera is always the crouching scribe of @BACKS. Something is in motion everywhere in the picture at all times: the machines run, the scribes' hands work, the king fidgets with his glass, the dust turns in the bars of light. The hand holding the phone is steady but human: the picture breathes, drifts and sags, the horizon sits a few degrees off and is corrected late. This is what somebody hiding behind a column at the back of the hall happened to catch. Nobody speaks. BEAT - 0.0 to 1.8 s, widest frame at 1x, zoom easing in to 1.5x @HALL @PHARAOH @COUNTERS @CASH @SCRIBES @BACKS - The widest frame of the take, from the far end of the hall: two rows of painted columns running away toward the dais, hard bars of daylight from the high slots with dust turning in them. The floor is ALREADY covered in @CASH, loose heaps, knee high walls of banded bricks, open sacks spilling more. The three seated @SCRIBES run from the bottom left toward the dais with @COUNTERS in front of them, all three machines ALREADY fluttering, every pair of hands working. @PHARAOH sits on the gilded throne far away on the dais over to the right at a twelfth of frame height, small at this distance, the green of @MATCHA a bright speck at his elbow. The bare back of @BACKS fills the bottom left quarter, hands raking. At 1.5 seconds the zoom eases in to 1.5x in one slow move, drifting. - It is a long way down there. - BEAT - 1.8 to 3.6 s, 1.5x, zoom easing in to 2.3x, same position, no cut @COUNTERS @CASH @SCRIBES @PHARAOH @BACKS - The frame has come in a long way: the three @SCRIBES and their machines fill the lower middle at a third of frame height, walls of counted bricks at their shoulders, @PHARAOH still small on the throne over to the right, the columns behind just as soft and just as much in focus, no blurred background. The bare back of @BACKS still fills the bottom left corner. At 2.2 seconds the scribe closest to the lens drops a fresh brick into his hopper, the wheel blurs and the notes fan through with a hard flutter. Far up the hall @PHARAOH turns the glass of @MATCHA a quarter turn with two fingers. At 3.3 seconds the zoom eases in to 2.3x and the picture wobbles and is pulled back late. - More is coming in. - BEAT - 3.6 to 5.4 s, 2.3x, zoom easing back out to 1.9x, same position, no cut @HALL @CASH @SCRIBES @COUNTERS @PHARAOH @BACKS - At 3.8 seconds the zoom eases back out to 1.9x so the whole length of the hall, the floor of @CASH, all three of @COUNTERS running, the @SCRIBES and @PHARAOH far away on his throne are in the frame again, the king at a seventh of frame height. At 4.4 seconds the fourth scribe walks in from a side door with a full sack over one shoulder, drops it and walks straight out, bricks sliding from its mouth across the floor. Up on the dais @PHARAOH rolls one shoulder, shifts his weight and re-crosses the other ankle over, watching the far doorway. The picture drifts down the hall and is corrected late. - Now it goes right in. - BEAT - 5.4 to 7.0 s, zoom easing in hard to 3.4x, the closest frame of the take by a long way, same position, no cut @PHARAOH @MATCHA @CASH @BACKS - At 5.5 seconds the zoom eases in to 3.4x, much further than it has gone at any point, the longest step of the take, and the picture goes soft and blocky with it the way a cheap phone does at the end of its range: @PHARAOH on the throne at half of frame height off-center, a wall of banded @CASH still in the frame below the dais, the bare back of @BACKS still in the bottom left corner. At 5.9 seconds he takes the glass of @MATCHA off the table, drinks through the steel straw and the green level drops, turns the glass slowly in his fingers on the arm of the throne and sets it back down. At 6.6 seconds he pushes the sunglasses up with one knuckle, lifts his chin slowly, once, and settles back, watching the far doorway. The three machines go on fluttering down the hall. The picture breathes, drifts and sags until the last frame. - It is a lot of money. - No audio: a silent clip, no dialogue, no voices, no sound effects, no music. Ugly, pixelated, low-quality phone footage from the first frame to the last, all of it one unbroken handheld take.
